10. Ensure all Security Staff wear the required standard uniform for their assignment at all times without exception or authorisation in writing from the Manager of Client Services.

Required Education, Qualifications and Experience

1. Candidate must have a valid BC Security Licence;
2. Candidate must have a valid Driver’s Licence with a clean driver’s abstract;
3. Previous experience in security is required;
4. Previous supervisory experience is an asset;

  • Following-up with all necessary administrative responsibilities.
  • Responds to all incoming telephone calls in the appropriate manner.
  • Ensure the protection of privacy.
  • Provide information on bylaws and procedures to public.
  • Greet and assist visitors in a professional, courteous manner.
  • Investigate alleged bylaw contraventions electronically and by phone.

Job Overview

RCMP Guards monitor and safeguard person in custody. Applicant must live with a 30 min. drive of the Detachment.

Physical handling of prisoners is not a job requirement for Detention Guards.  Any movement of Prisoners will be conducted by the RCMP.  Guard duties are to monitor prisoners and to document prisoner movement/activities, as per RCMP policy guidelines.

Job Profile

  • Monitor all prisoners to ensure their security and well being
  • Observe and check prisoners frequently and irregularly
  • Assist RCMP member when required to search prisoners (training provided)
  • Organize meals, record prisoner activity and maintain a prisoner activity logbook
  • Watch prisoners while in hospital when required
  • Maintain cleanliness and tidiness of cells when vacated or arrange janitor assistance
  • Record and report any damages or repairs to cells
  • Conduct searches of cells prior to occupation and when cells are vacated
  • Maintain cellblock security (ensure cell doors are locked at all times)
  • Ensure cellblock keys are tagged and stored safely
  • Ensure all personal effects removed from prisoners are properly secured
  • Monitor fire safety and be fully conversant with fire orders
  • Handle and dispense laundry items
  • Under the supervision of the RCMP Officer, dispense approved prescription medications to persons in custody
  • Perform other duties particular to that station or detachment as outlined in the Unit

Required Education, Qualifications and Experience

At a minimum, Guards must meet the following educational and training qualifications prior to commencement of Guard duties.

  • Demonstrated ability to read, write and speak in English or French as appropriate
  • Bilingual Guards may be required for some communities
  • Basic level computer skills an asset
  • Vision: Visual standards are RCMP-V4 (eye glasses permitted)
  • Able to use both hands
  • Occasionally required to manipulate/lift up to 20 kg
  • Able to bend at the waist and climb stairs without restrictions or the use of assistance devices
  • Must have valid level one First Aid Certificate c/w Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
  • WHMIS Certificate would be an asset

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

Required Training

  • Duty-specific guard training provided to successful candidates prior to commencement of guard duties
  • Refresher training provided to RCMP guards in accordance with RCMP directives

Assignments

HOURS OF WORK/AVAILABILITY ON-CALL, CASUAL with a minimum of four shifts availability per week across a seven day period is preferred.  Those applicants with more availability will be given preference.

Shifts could include: mornings (7am-3pm), afternoons (3pm-11pm) and nights (11pm to 7am) but will vary based on the job assignment.

LOCATIONS

We have various locations to offer.  However, the bulk of our sites reside in Vancouver, Burnaby and Surrey.  Access to a vehicle is an asset but most sites are located on the transit line.

  • Hold a valid BC Security License and Occupational First Aid Level 1 or be willing to complete training and testing
  • Fluent English written, verbal and reading skills
  • Intermediate computer skills would be an asset
  • Positive attitude with professional demeanour and strong interpersonal / customer service skills
  • Excellent attention to detail to fulfill job duties and incident report writing
  • Excellent problem solving skills and ability to handle emergency situations in a calm and professional manner
  • Ability to work independently and make sound decisions in varying situations
  • Willingness to work shifts ranging from 8 hours to 12 hours, rotating days, afternoons and nights as required by client site
  • Physically fit and able to stand for long periods and able to work in a range of weather. conditions throughout shift including working indoors and outdoors
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and experience working with computers plus other office equipment such as fax and photocopiers preferred
  • Valid BC Driver’s license is an asset
  • Minimum 19 years of age, High School diploma, and good physical health
