The Site Supervisor is responsible for the overall operation of the New Westminster Police Department Detention Centre

Job Profile

• Coordinate all detention training activities as required;
• Complete the necessary probationary reports for new guards;
• Ensure that all annual evaluations are completed for site guards as required;
• Ensure that the Site Risk Assessment is current at all times;
• Complete a Site Safety Check List as applicable;
• Responsible for the current inventory control;
• Ensure that all guards maintain the necessary qualifications:
• Provide counselling/discipline when there is a requirement;
• Complete a Site Training Scenario once a month;
• Coordinate all vacations and holiday requests for site guards;
• Liaise with both managers and HR Generalists for replacement guards;
• Communicate on a regular basis with Commissionaires BC Managers;
• Communicate on a regular basis with the NWPS client/jail NCO;
• Provide effective direction and control to site guards;
• Ensure that the detention operations is operating in an effective manner;
• Ensure that all supporting detention documentation is well maintained;
• Coordinate prisoner transportation with the NW police officers/Deputy Sheriffs;
• Report all shortcomings to the detention operation immediately to the client;
• Complete all custodial guard duties as required; and
• Complete any other related tasks as directed by the Manager, Client Services or the NWPS client.

Required Education, Qualifications and Experience

• Those applicants that have held previous experience as a detention guard or in a law enforcement position will be given priority.
• Previous supervisory experience will be an asset specifically in a same or similar role.
• As an internal candidate, you will not be considered if you are currently on performance probation.
• Applicants must have positive performance evaluations on file and any disciplinary warnings will be assessed.
• Have demonstrated interest and experience in serving the public.
• Hold Occupational First Aid Level 1 certificate.
• Have completed BST training with a passing mark of at least 75%.
• Intermediate computer skills would be an asset with proficiency in Microsoft Office, and other office equipment including faxes and photocopiers.
• Fluent English written, verbal and reading skills.
• Possess exemplary moral and ethical character.
• Possess a high degree of personal integrity and maturity.
• Possess the ability to learn.
• Possess the ability to use sound judgment and common sense.
• Be able to function well in a team environment.

  • Provide superior customer service to clients and general public.

  • Monitor and measure the performance of site supervisors and provide feedback regularly and facilitate the performance management process annually as per policy

Job Overview

RCMP Guards monitor and safeguard person in custody. Applicant must live with a 30 minute drive of the Detachment.

Physical handling of prisoners is not a job requirement for Detention Guards.  Any movement of Prisoners will be conducted by the RCMP.  Guard duties are to monitor prisoners and to document prisoner movement/activities, as per RCMP policy guidelines.

Job Profile

Monitor all prisoners to ensure their security and well being;

  • Observe and check prisoners frequently and irregularly;
  • Assist RCMP member when required to search prisoners (training provided);
  • Organize meals, record prisoner activity and maintain a prisoner activity logbook;
  • Watch prisoners while in hospital when required;
  • Maintain cleanliness and tidiness of cells when vacated or arrange janitor assistance;
  • Record and report any damages or repairs to cells;
  • Conduct searches of cells prior to occupation and when cells are vacated;
  • Maintain cellblock security (ensure cell doors are locked at all times);
  • Ensure cellblock keys are tagged and stored safely;
  • Ensure all personal effects removed from prisoners are properly secured;
  • Monitor fire safety and be fully conversant with fire orders;

  • Under the supervision of the RCMP Officer, dispense approved prescription medications to persons in  custody and :
  • Perform other duties particular to that station or detachment as outlined in the Unit.

Required Education, Qualifications and Experience

At a minimum, Guards must meet the following educational and training qualifications prior to commencement of Guard duties.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Able to obtain and RCMP Reliability and Public Works Reliability Clearance (RCMP Clearance can take 4-6 months to obtain)
  • Demonstrated ability to read, write and speak in English or French as appropriate;
  • Bilingual Guards may be required for some communities;
  • Basic level computer skills an asset;
  • Vision: Visual standards are RCMP-V4 (eye glasses permitted);
  • Able to use both hands;
  • Occasionally required to manipulate/lift up to 20 kg;
  • Able to bend at the waist and climb stairs without restrictions or the use of assistive devices; and
  • Valid level one First Aid Certificate c/w Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation.

Duty-specific Guard training  provided to successful candidates prior to commencement of Guard duties;
