Why I Work Here

Andrea Dean, Uber Employees
July 21, 2009

Employee: Marian Gushue-Geiger

Workplace: Commissionaires BC

Position: Manager Human Resources Interior Regions

Tenure: 2 years

Reasons for working for the Commissionaires: "It's the whole package - I have an excellent job, we are in the downtown core, which is terrific. I love the amenities of being downtown - I can go to an art gallery on my lunch hour and I like that kind of stimulation. We have great office space, I can bike to work and the benefits are great."

My boss: "I have two bosses - the VP of HR in Vancouver (our corporate headquarters) and Operations Director for Interior Regions (Kelowna) I have a good relationship with both of them. We're straightforward people and there's a lot of appreciation for our roles. We respect each other's strengths."

Co-Workers: "It's great because everybody pitches in to help. We all have our own disciplines, but nobody minds stepping out of that to help out another member of the team. We get to multitask because of the small office staff here. This office looks after Commissionaires and contracts for Southern Interior and Northern Regions, as well as, the Kootenay District. There's a lot of variety -- fingerprinting, photo-ids, mobile patrol requests, hiring, training, etc.... "

Defining moment of choosing to work here: "I wanted to be able to bike to work. I wanted a small team and be in a position of influence. I wanted excellent benefits. And I get all of that here!"

The flat side: "Having Operations show up on my doorstep at 4 p.m. on a Friday afternoon to tell me that they don't have enough staff for the weekend!"

Why I still like it here: "The strength of the Commissionaires is that it was founded on returning vets who were specialists in protection. Today, it's evolving into a very recognized security company. We train people for security for the Olympics and other major functions and that's so exciting. Our business is very diversified. I'm able to build the department and be creative about how I recruit and create hiring initiatives throughout the province -- and if I want to paint my office sunshine yellow, I can do that."
