Roger Harber

Learning & Development Specialist Internal

Roger HarberRoger has had a long and distinguished career with Commissionaires BC. He has worked his way through many of the different departments of Commissionaires and now focuses on learning and development. His expertise in planning and organizational development makes him the go-to person for ensuring all courses meet provincial and national standards.

From the age of 13 Roger knew he wanted to serve his country in the Canadian Forces. Enlisting as a recruit, he mastered basic training and moved into the role of traffic technician, focusing on transportation and logistics. During his career in the military, Roger served on a United Nations tour in the Middle East and also a tour in Alaska working with the U.S. Military.

Flying for four years as a Loadmaster on a C130 Hercules Transport aircraft in Trenton, Ontario, Roger’s position as Loadmaster was invaluable. Through careful calculation of weight and balance, Roger ensured that aircraft could safely fly. Further training in this area included Loadmaster training in TAL (Tactical Airlift) and SAR (Search and Rescue) which involved airdrops of various types at low altitude.

Roger’s last military posting was with the 441 Tactical Fighter Squadron located in Cold Lake, Alberta. During this time, he held the challenging position of Transportation Coordinator for the squadron. Here, load tables had to be developed to deploy the entire squadron, if required, at a moment’s notice to anywhere in the world.

While in Manitoba, Roger was part of a volunteer firefighter unit as well as a volunteer search and rescue team. Here he was able to use his love of logistics to help locate lost people and help figure out the best way to attack a blazing fire. His volunteer service was not without risks though; he had his fireman’s uniform burned right off his back in a forest fire.

After retirement from the military in 1992, Roger worked in industry as a transportation and customs coordinator. This role led him to join Commissionaires where he held numerous positions from guarding federal public buildings to managing teams in security and enforcement services. Then in 2007, he joined the training group, becoming a training coordinator in 2009. He is a certified Commissionaires trainer, a certified BST instructor through the Justice Institute of BC, as well as a certified trainer for the Tourism BC “WorldHost” program, and a member of Canadian Society of Training and Development (CSTD).

With Roger’s military background and practical experience in the security industry, his students see that he doesn’t just talk the talk. He imparts sound training methods and a real interest in his students. Roger’s philosophy is that training facilitators are there to help students, and he is dedicated to having 100% of his students graduate from his course.
