WHO NEEDS CRIMINAL RECORD CHECKS AND WHY?

Commissionaires BC provides criminal record checks (also called criminal history record checks, police record checks, police certificates, CPICs, police clearances, criminal background checks, RCMP criminal record checks) for the purposes of pre-employment screening, visa applications and foreign travel / work permits to individuals, employees or organizations.

Note: If you work or volunteer with vulnerable members of society (e.g., with children, the elderly or persons with disabilities), please go to the police detachment in your jurisdiction to get your criminal record checked. Learn more about RCMP vulnerable sector checks.

HOW DO I GET A CRIMINAL RECORD CHECK?

Step 2: Visit one of our convenient locations in Vancouver, Kelowna and Surrey to confirm your identification. Please bring two pieces of valid government issued identification (one must be a photo ID).

Alternatively, applications can be completed in person at one of our convenient locations in Vancouver, Kelowna and Surrey or remotely for out of country clients. All applicants are welcome with no restrictions on your place of residence.

To speed up the process, please ensure you have all the necessary materials in hand before you visit our office.

OUT OF COUNTRY CRIMINAL RECORD CHECKS

Please contact us to start the process for an out of country criminal records check. We will send you the required forms and instructions and send you the certificate once the result comes back. On your end, you will need to have copies of your identification notarized, fill out the forms and send them back to us by courier (tracked and secure).

You must bring two pieces of valid government issued identification and one must be a photo ID. The following are types of acceptable identification. Please check with your local office for additional types of identification which may be accepted:

  • Passport
  • Driver’s License
  • Birth Certificate
  • Canadian Citizenship Card
  • Permanent Resident Card
  • Certificate of Indian Status
  • Immigration Documents i.e. work or study permits
  • Military Family ID card (MFID)
  • Record of Landing for Citizenship Applicant
  • Certificate of Live Birth
  • Nexus card

  • It is recommended you bring with you a letter from the requesting source, if applicable
  • All identification must be current and not expired

Fees
For standard service is $40 plus GST.
For out of country service, the cost is $99 plus GST, plus the cost to get two pieces of ID notarized and the courier costs to and from.

Criminal record checks are available locally at convenient locations in Vancouver, Kelowna and Surrey. They are also available for our out of country applicants—contact us for more information.

MOBILE SERVICES

We also offer a mobile service for group and VIP processing. We’ll travel to your location to collect information for criminal background checks and other types of applications.

We can process as little as one employee, or do up to large groups for a cost-effective group rate. For travel outside our major service areas, additional charges will be calculated based on mileage.

CRIMINAL RECORD CHECK RESULTS

Criminal record checks are processed through the National Canadian Police Information Center (CPIC) database, providing results in as fast as 48 hours.

All results are strictly confidential and are released directly back to the applicant unless otherwise requested by signing a third party consent waiver. To obtain your police clearance results in person, you must produce your receipt of payment.

How long does it take to fill in an application?

The process of filling in your criminal record check application takes approximately 10 minutes. Applications must be completed in the presence of our Commissionaires’ service agents, at one of our offices, or at your location with our mobile service.

How do I get my results and how long does it take?

The National Canadian Police Information Center can provide a fax or electronic copy of results to Commissionaires BC in as little as 48 hours after submission. Results can be obtained in person by the applicant by showing picture ID or they can be received by fax or sent to a third party if this is pre-arranged. The original copy of the results will be available about one week after submission.

Who needs a vulnerable sector check?

A vulnerable sector check is required by applicants working with the vulnerable sector, including those working with children, the elderly and disabled. If you are involved with the vulnerable sector and are seeking a criminal background check, please go to your local police detachment.

Will results list actual offense details?

No. Criminal record check certificate results will show either ‘Approved’ or ‘Rejected’ and no details of offenses will be listed.

Is Commissionaires a government agency?
