Training Course: Occupational First Aid Level 3

The Occupational First Aid Level 3 course developed by the Workers’ Compensation Board is a 70 hour program divided into 20 lessons of approximately 3.5 hours each. For each lesson there is specific homework and students should be prepared to spend 1.5 to 2 hours of at home study per lesson. A medical Form [contained in the student syllabus] needs to be handed in prior to or on the day of the examination. To qualify for Level 3 training and subsequent certification, a person must be at least 16 years old and have the physical ability to perform first aid skills required to complete the learning tasks.

Instructional Objectives

Each participant will be able to identify/demonstrate the following on conscious patients and patients with a decreased level of consciousness:

  • Priority Action Approach;
  • identify and manage critical interventions of the airway with C-spine control. Identify respiratory emergencies and manage critical interventions;
  • identify circulatory emergencies and manage critical interventions;
  • prepare patients for rapid transport in the supine and lateral positions;
  • conduct the secondary survey component of the priority action approach for patients requiring urgent medical attention and patients in the first aid room;
  • assess, manage and identify the need for medical aid referral for soft tissue injuries;
  • identify and manage abdominal injuries, upper limb fractures and dislocations;
  • describe the general classifications of poisons and describe the priority action approach for poisoning
